We respond to different situations in life on three levels: Analytical-logical, Intuitive-emotional and Reflexive-instinctual. These three levels of response, correspond with the Logical-analytic part of our brain, the Emotional-mammalian part of our brain and the Instinctive-reptilian part of our brain.
Our instincts are genetically hard-wired patterns of behavior. When we are stimulated in a specific manner, we are designed to respond in a specific way. Instincts is a quality that we share with many other animals.
Instincts allow us to respond relatively quickly and are vital to our survival. Our instincts many times guide us to short term advantages but at the risk of losing long term advantages.
Relying heavily on instincts, while neglecting logic and intuition, may lead us to counterproductive responses.
