Conscious Breathing

Conscious Breathing

There are two separate sets of nerves that control our breathing system. Our lungs are the only organs in the body that we have both voluntary and involuntary control over. When we are not aware of our breathing, our Autonomic Nerves System is in control and we breathe unconsciously. We can override the Autonomic Nerves System and make conscious decisions about the way we breathe.

The seven main conscious choices that we can make about our breathing are:

1 nose or mouth breathing
2 operating muscles
3 tempo of breathing
4 amplitude of breathing
5 Inhale vs. exhale duration
6 holding the breath
7 generating sounds

There are other relevant breathing choices that we can make, which may influence the way we breath. Here are a few examples.

Position and shape of our tong
Shape of mouth opening
Nostril opening dilation
Eyes balls position
Anal muscles
